Vergers

Vergers are committed lay ministers within the Church who are well versed in the parish's history and the various orders of service. They assist the clergy in the conduct of public worship, especially in the marshalling of processions. Their duties can be purely ceremonial or include other responsibilities, such as the oversight of the preparations for services, weddings or in some parishes the duties of the sexton. Vergers free the clergy to prepare themselves spiritually for the day's services by ensuring that everyone assigned to participate in the service is present and knows his or her responsibilities. Vergers also often lead visiting clergy and speakers to the pulpit and attend to their physical needs during their visit.
